MAC Monday | Cult of Cherry - Kirsch Mattene Swatches & Review

Cult of Cherry is one of those hallowed collections I've lusted after from afar for many years. MAC have done quite a few red themed collections, but I think this was one of the earliest, launching in July 2008 (and quickly followed by Red, She Said for the holiday season that year). It also marked the second outing of the Mattenes, which had first debuted in their eponymous collection in 2007.

I'd love to get my hands on the three other Mattenes that featured in this collection (Rapturous, Chock-Ful and Bing) but for now I'll settle for Kirsch, which was a lucky find on MUABS. The Mattene formula settles somewhere between MAC's matte and satin formulas and is generally richly pigmented with smooth application. Their slim tubes and matte rubberized packaging sets them apart from MAC's regular lipsticks. I love the look of the packaging but it is truly awful to try and keep clean. They have the usual MAC vanilla scent.

Kirsch is described as a 'blackened cranberry'. It has subtle red sparkles which aren't really noticeable on the lips but can be seen peeking through in the arm swatches and the close up of the lipstick bullet. It has mostly even colour pay off but there's a slipperiness to this particular shade that makes it a little difficult to even out completely - definitely one that needs a coordinating lip liner to suit my tastes better. It lasts for just over five hours on me and is slightly drying but despite its flaws, I'm really happy to have a small piece from this collection and love the colour. What do you think of Kirsch?

MAC Monday | Cult of Cherry - Kirsch Mattene Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Mostly opaque colour pay off
  • Wears for five hours
  • No feathering or bleeding
What I didn't like:
  • Can be hard to completely even out the colour
  • Minimally drying
  • Hard to keep packaging clean

Darling Girl Eyeshadows - Coco Loco, Marzipan Nipples, Lasso of Truth, Bob-B-Q and Fira Swatches & Review

I've got a lovely mix of Darling Girl neutral eyeshadows to show you today. Neutrals with a twist, I should say, as all of these have contrasting shimmer or a duochrome finish that sets them apart from your average neutrals.

Some of the shades reviewed below are permanent, while others are discontinued or past COTM (colour of the month) shades, so I'll note their availability with each review. Last year Susan did a Pink Friday sale where she brought back selected COTM and GWP shades for a limited time and I really hope she does the same this year.

Darling Girl's eyeshadows come in a few different sizing options: full sizes are packaged in 5g jars with approximately 3/4 tsp of product ($6USD). Petits are packaged in 3g jars with approximately 1/4 tsp of product ($2.50USD). You can also try a sample set, which includes 5 shades of your choosing in baggies, each containing 1/8th tsp for $4USD. I've gone down that route many times as you can get samples of any eyeshadows, Diamond Dusts, Spectral Shifts or loose blushes, excellent if you want a great cross section of colours and formulas to try!

Swatch notes:
All eyeshadow swatches in this post are done two ways: applied on bare skin on the left hand side and over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, a sticky eyeshadow base which maximises colour intensity and sparkle, on the right. This is so you can see how they perform both ways. I take all of my photos with daylight bulbs for colour accuracy.

 Fira

Fira (discontinued) is a rich russet brown with strong pink sheen that lends it a coppery cast. At extreme angles the pink changes to green, the shift being more visible over a sticky base. I wish this one was still around, it makes a great "one and done" shadow and blends beautifully.

Lasso of Truth

Lasso of Truth (past GWP) is a warm caramel brown with subtle subtle blue and red sparks. It's true to the usual velvety smooth formula, it works well by itself and is stunning over a sticky base.

Bob-B-Q

Bob-B-Q (past COTM) is an orangey brown with pink and copper sparkles. It becomes much darker over a sticky base so I think you could do a lot with this eyeshadow in one makeup look just by using or omitting different types of bases! I found it slightly difficult to blend over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, likely because it has a semi matte base to it, which typically don't play nicely with Pixie Epoxy.
This eyeshadow is inspired by The Walking Dead, which I haven't yet seen and am not sure I'm brave enough to try! Are you a Walking Dead fan?

Darling Girl Eyeshadows - Lasso of Truth, Bob-B-Q and Fira Swatches & Review

Here I've used This is Lemonade? (Snow in Love collection) as an inner corner highlight with Lasso of Truth on the inner half of the lid and Bob-B-Q and Fira on the outer half and centre of the lid respectively. I smudged black liner along my lower lashline and patted Avon Calling (also Snow in Love collection) over that. I also used Slave For Sensation from the Matte I'd Like To Find collection as a transition shade. The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.

Marzipan Nipples

Darling Girl Marzipan Nipples eyeshadow swatches & review

Marzipan Nipples (permanent) is described as an 'almost matte pinky-tan' with 'peachy sheen'. There's some pinky-violet shimmer going on here too, at least to my eye. It performs equally well alone or with a base, darkening up considerably with Pixie Epoxy. Marzipan Nipples takes its name from Orange is the New Black, which again, I haven't seen - I feel like I'm living under a rock over here, guys!

Darling Girl Marzipan Nipples eyeshadow swatches & review

I've used Marzipan Nipples on the inner corner for this look, with a couple of other Darling Girl shades: Cake Pops on the lid and lower lashline and #breaktheinternet to blend out.

Darling Girl Marzipan Nipples eyeshadow swatches & review

I'm also wearing a little too much of another Darling Girl product in this look - it's Blushing Heart Inner Glow Blush, which I'll be reviewing soon.

Coco Loco

Coco Loco (permanent) is described as lightest tan with lavender iridescence'. This isn't currently listed on the new site but Susan says it isn't discontinued, so hopefully it should be available on the new site soon. Coco Loco is beautiful and was one of my first 'neutral with a twist' eyeshadows from Darling Girl, it truly opened the floodgates! The shimmer shows up more strongly over a sticky base, as you can see, but is still quite visible when applied alone, and it blends out easily.

Darling Girl Coco Loco eyeshadow swatches & review

I've used Coco Loco all over the lid and lower lashline here with #breaktheinternet on the crease and Forget Me Nots Spectral Shift on the inner corner. I used the LORAC Pro palette for extra depth too. The lashes are Ardell Curvy #411s.

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

The LA Splash Lip Couture range has been all the rage recently, particularly with people looking for alternatives to Lime Crime Velvetines, so I decided to pick one up and see what all the fuss was about. If you want a highly pigmented lipstick that will last all day, you definitely need to check these out!

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

Matte liquid lipsticks seem to have quickly become LA Splash's forte, they have four different versions of the formula which are differentiated by different coloured caps and varying packaging and applicators. The Lip Couture range has a gold cap and a long applicator that tapers on each side, the Smitten Lip Tint Mousse have pink caps and small doefoot applicators, the StudioShine Waterproof Lip Lustres have silver caps and angled medium doefoots, and still a fourth range, the Velvet Matte Liquid Lipsticks have a red chrome cap, a frosted barrel and angled medium doefoots.

The long, tapered applicator present here isn't a style I'm overly keen on - the length feels unwieldy - but it does the job well enough and I was able to outline and fill in my lips easily with it.

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

Hidden Desires is a vibrant orchid purple with great colour pay off. The formula feels similar to MUA and Makeup Revolution's lip lacquers, if you've tried those - it's quite thick and paint like. This thickness tends to show more with additional layering; I needed two coats for opaque colour on my lower lip and you can see it's looking thicker there and has a slightly plastic sheen. You'll want to give it a good couple of minutes between layers as until dry the formula remains quite tacky and can streak or remove sections if over-manipulated or allowed to touch too soon.
When I tested for wear, Hidden Desires lasted a solid seven hours on me, after that remnants continued to linger for a further three and a half hours but it was looking pretty beaten up at that point - and understandably so, after ten hours! The thickness didn't make it uncomfortable to wear, in fact it was only minimally drying toward the end of wear. It has an odd, chemical kind of scent.

LA Splash Lip Couture - Hidden Desires Swatches & Review

I'm kind of left feeling ambivalent about this product. I adore the colour and the longevity's definitely a selling point, but the thickness isn't my favourite. It's also worth noting that at $14USD, these aren't that much cheaper than formulas I personally prefer, like Jeffree Star's Velour Liquid Lipsticks ($18USD).

A tip for international readers - these seem to be cheaper by a dollar or so on Ebay compared to LA Splash's webstore, many of the listings I saw had free international shipping too. LA Splash's international shipping is an astronomical $27.95USD flat rate (including insurance - I'd bloody hope so, at that price!).

What I liked:
  • Great colour pay off
  • Wears for seven hours
  • Doesn't migrate or feather

What I didn't like:
  • Minimally drying
  • Odd chemical scent

Lust Have It December 2015 Review

Lust Have It December Review

Lust Have It's December box arrived in my hot little hands in early January and after playing around with each of the products for a while now I'm ready to share my thoughts.

In case you haven't heard of or tried Lust Have It before, they're an Aussie based beauty subscription box company that promise to send out 5 to 6 samples per subscription box for $19.95AUD with a $2.95 postage charge. The contents are a surprise, with Lust Have It aiming to provide you with an assortment of items you might not necessarily have picked up yourself (but will hopefully enjoy!).

Included in my December box was:
  • Naobay Moisturizing Peeling Brightening Facial Milk Scrub RRP $27AUD | Full size
  • Sasy n Savy Hand Cream RRP $15-20AUD | Full size
  • Essenzza Fuss Free Naturals Micellar Mini Wipes RRP $2.25AUD | Travel size
  • Be A Bombshell Eyeshadow Quad RRP $22AUD | Full size | 2 colour options
  • Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil RRP $24.50AUD
This was a fairly value packed month, with all but one of the items being full sized. Surprisingly the skincare items won my heart this time around, usually it's the opposite!

Be A Bombshell London Eyeshadow Quad Swatches & Review

Be A Bombshell London Eyeshadow Quad Swatches & Review

Be A Bombshell London Eyeshadow Quad Swatches & Review

Let's start with my least favourite product and get it out of the way! This Be A Bombshell Eyeshadow Quad left me distinctly unimpressed, the colour pay off is weak and it doesn't blend terribly well. For the arm swatches I had to do around five swipes for each colour to get them to show and they didn't fare much better on the lid - you really need to pack them on over a good primer. I'm honestly not sure what universe this is worth $22AUD in.

Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil Swatches & Review

Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil Swatches & Review

The second cosmetic item is the Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil, a creamy matte chubby pencil that you can use to brighten and  highlight. I think it'd work better for me if it wasn't so close to the colour of my face (my inner arm, which I swatched it on, is paler and cooler in tone). I'm wearing it on the cupids bow in the lip swatch and really didn't notice any difference. It blended out easily and and had a nice texture though, so worth checking out if it works for your skintone.

Naobay Moisturizing Peeling Gel Review

This one has a ridiculously long name - it's the Naobay Moisturizing Peeling Brightening Facial Milk Scrub. Save some info for the back of the tube, guys! Initially I was quite excited as I thought it might be a peeling gel - I've never tried one of those before, and they look appealingly gross yet fun. It's actually just a scrub, but a really nice one, with a good amount of grit and a very light citrus scent. I've been reaching for this often!

Sasy N Savy Hand Cream review

This Sasy N Savy is pretty brilliant stuff! I got the Jasmine scent from the Orchid From Paradise range and the fragrance is quite strong, but not off putting - fans of floral scents will really enjoy it. I've been slathering this on regularly and love how moisturizing it is, without being slick or greasy in the slightest. I'm actually down the the last dregs in the tube now and would definitely repurchase given the chance.

Essenzza Fuss Free Naturals Micellar Mini Wipes review

Finally we have this little travel size packet of micellar cleansing wipes. I quite liked these, they're gentle on the skin but the wipes have an embossed texture that really helps to grab and lift at your makeup. I'd consider picking up more if I saw them in a shop, but they didn't blow me away enough to hunt them down or pay international shipping - a quick Google search only seemed to turn up stockists in Australia.

If you'd like to try out a Lust Have It subscription for yourself, you can use the code LANILOVES1 to get $5 off your first month at www.lusthaveit.com.au/ :)

MAC Monday | Neo Sci-Fi - Electro and Sci-Fi-Delity Lipstick Swatches & Review

MAC have a vision for the future and it is spectacularly orange. Their packaging has never been as bright again as it was with 2008's Neo Sci-Fi collection, the retina-searing neon orange polarizing collectors everywhere. Personally, I love it. Bring back the orange, MAC! :D I have two lipsticks from this collection to share with you today.

MAC Monday | Neo Sci-Fi - Electro and Sci-Fi-Delity Lipstick Swatches & Review

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
The lipstick finishes in this collection were a mixture of frosts, lustres and a glaze, historically not my favourite of the many MAC offer as lustres and frosts in particular can be drying. I didn't have any issues with these two though (a lustre and a frost). Frosts are finely shimmered and mostly opaque, while lustres are usually on the sheerer side with some being more buildable. MAC lipsticks have a vanilla scent.

Electro

MAC Neo Sci-Fi - Electro Lipstick Swatches & Review

Electro is a bright orange with Lustre finish. It's definitely one of the most opaque Lustres I've had the pleasure of trying, gliding on smoothly for a lovely glossy finish, and it wears for five hours on me without drying out my lips or migrating. Love!

Sci-Fi-Delity

MAC Neo Sci-Fi - Sc-Fi-Delity Lipstick Swatches & Review

MAC Neo Sci-Fi - Sc-Fi-Delity Lipstick Swatches & Review

Sci-Fi-Delity is described as a 'burnt red with gold pearlized pigments'. It has a frost finish and mostly opaque colour pay off. I hope MAC consider bringing Sci-Fi-Delity back someday because I think it would be completely at home amongst the resurgence of shimmery lipsticks we're currently seeing! The base colour is lightly frosted with larger gold sparkles which catch the light beautifully and it applies smoothly. It lasted five hours on me and wasn't drying.

MAC Neo Sci-Fi - Sc-Fi-Delity Lipstick Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Mostly opaque colour pay off
  • Non drying
  • Wore for five hours
  • No feathering/bleeding/migration
What I didn't like:
  • Nothing! Both winners in my book.

What do you think of these two? Do you envision a neon orange future like MAC?

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

Recently I've had the pleasure of trying out the rather swanky Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightening Irons, which are definitely a huge jump up from my old cheapie straighteners! I've been using Remington hair styling tools for years now so I was really excited to try these straighteners out.

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

The ceramic plates on the Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish straightener are infused with keratin and argan oil which help to maintain the health of your hair, imbue shine and combat frizz. I'm a big fan of argan oil and use it regularly, so I know it works for my hair but it should be noted that these wunderkind ingredients don't take the place of a heat protectant! Always make sure to use one to protect your hair from damage when heat styling - I love L'Oreal Supersleek Smoothing Blow-Dry Mist and Hask Express Blow Dry Hair Drying Spray.

This straightener boasts a temperature range from 190 to 230 degrees Celsius which you can adjust with plus and minus buttons located by the power button on the side of the straightener. It doesn't take long to reach your chosen temperature, either - an impressive 30 second heat up time, during which the numbers on the display will continue to flash until the ceramic plates have reached the chosen temperature. You can lock the chosen temperature in place by pressing the power switch twice - this is handy if you're prone to accidentally hitting buttons while distracted (just ask my group chat pals how many times a day I unintentionally spam them with the group emoji!). The most important feature, though, is the automatic safety shut off. Of course you should never ever leave your straightener unattended while switched on and you should unplug it after every use - BUT on the off chance you get caught out, it'll turn itself off within ten minutes or so.

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

Once heated up, it's really easy to use. There are small grooves on either side of the plates which help to keep your hair from getting tangled while curling your hair, the exterior is pretty cool to the touch and it's comfortable to hold. I've now been playing with this for two months and find it so much quicker to style my hair with it than with previous straighteners or curlers. My hair is on the thick side and medium length, so it would usually take me 30-45 minutes to do my whole head, but this cuts the time in half.

A couple of my friends mentioned that they struggle with straightener curls so I thought I'd share a few snaps showing how I do it!

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

I start off with clean, freshly brushed hair spritzed with heat protectant and some argan oil previously applied to my ends, then roughly section my hair by securing the top half in a bun. One of these days I'll buy some sectioning clips to do it properly, but for now this works just fine!

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

To curl my hair, I take a section of around 4 centimetres/1.5 inches between the plates, then tilt the straightener at a roughly 45 degree angle before slowly running it through my hair. The whole process takes under 10 seconds. Then I let the curl drop and move onto the next section. I usually alternate the direction I'm curling in with each section but I wanted a different effect here, so I kept the same direction.

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

Before long my hair's starting to look pretty crazy...

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

Optimal crazy hair levels achieved! After I've finished the curling, I add volume to my crown by lifting and straightening sections upwards and away from my head at a 90 degree angle, stopping about halfway down.

HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

After the curls have had adequate time to cool and set (I usually leave them for ten minutes or so while I get on with something else, but you can blast them with the cool setting on your hair dryer to get the job done quicker), I gently brush them out with a boar bristle brush for softly defined waves. Spritz with hair spray and you're done!

Straightening my hair took even less time, and I love how sleek it looks!

And one final hairstyle for the road - soft loose beachy waves, which my friend and hairdresser Mia showed me how to do.  All you have to do is take a small section of hair and angle the straightener as if you were going to curl it, but instead of following that motion all the way down, you flip the angle back and forth as you move down the length of your hair. My old straightener simply didn't get hot enough to make it work and I'd wind up with harshly crimped sections of hair or no effect at all. Not so with the Remington Nourish straightener! I did forget heat protectant on this day so it came out a little fluffy but definitely not as much as it would have had I forgone heat protectant with my old cheapie straightener.

All in all the Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener gets a big thumbs up in my book! It retails for $149.99NZD at Farmers.

What hair styles do you like to create with a hair straightener? Have you tried this one?

Maybelline 2016 New Releases Swatchfest!

Maybelline don't do new releases by halves - they kicked off 2016 with a monumental number of additions to their range, finally bringing long coveted products to New Zealand shores. I've got swatches and commentary on everything for you, so grab a cuppa and get comfy! More detailed reviews will be posted on most products at a later date but if there's anything you'd especially like to see don't be afraid to sing out. Now without further ado, let's dive in!

Maybelline 2016 New Releases Swatchfest!

Maybelline Color Tattoo Leather Swatches & Review

Color Tattoos (RRP $13.99NZD) have been the darling of the beauty community since they launched a few years back and the Leather range doesn't let down the team. They're exceptionally pigmented with just enough creaminess to make application and blending effortless. I often struggle with cream eyeshadows creasing, including some of the more shimmery Color Tattoos, but the Leathers hold up on me really well and I quite like the neutral shade range. There's Creamy Beige, a warm beige with very subtle shimmer, Vintage Plum, a light dusty purple, Chocolate Suede, a medium-dark brown with chocolate and copper shimmer running throughout and Dramatic Black, a classic matte black which is a welcome addition to the line up! I'm looking forward to using that one as a base for duochrome eyeshadows, so far I've used it as a gel liner which it worked wonderfully for. Which colour is your favourite?

Maybelline Masterbrow Pro Palette Swatches & Review

The all in one convenience of brow kits has anchored them in my makeup bag in recent months and the Masterbrow Pro Palette (RRP $19.99NZD) is an excellent example of why. There are two colour options available: Deep Brown, which I have, and Soft Brown. Each kit contains a tinted wax, a powder, and a sheer highlighter shade to carve out and emphasise beautiful brows. The brow colours have a good amount of pigment and the wax locks my unruly brow hairs in place. While most applicators included with kits and palettes are rubbish, the double ended angled brush included in the Masterbrow Pro Palette is actually pretty great. I use one end for the wax and the other for the powder and then dab on some of the highlight with a finger or a fluffy eyeshadow brush. This is definitely a must have kit if you love boldly defined eye brows!

Maybelline The Colossal Go Extreme! Leather Black Mascara Review

Maybelline have always held a great reputation for their mascaras and I've tried and loved a fair few of them - but oddly, never anything from their long running Colossal series! The Colossal Go Extreme! Leather Black mascara (RRP $24.99NZD) boasts a lengthy name and a formula that lifts even my stubborn lashes - I don't curl my eyelashes for mascara demos, but with a lash curler I think this mascara would be pretty unstoppable. It doesn't clump or flake and gets the job done.

Maybelline Colorsensational Creamy Matte Lipstick Swatches & Review

I've already waxed lyrical about the Creamy Matte lipsticks before (see part one and part two) but I'll happily do so again because it's a formula that I really, really enjoy. Banishing stiff, drying mattes firmly in the past, Maybelline's Creamy Mattes (RRP $19.99NZD) go on smoothly with a lovely cushiony texture and excellent colour pay off. I cannot recommend these enough! My current favourite shades are Lust For Blush and Touch of Spice. Which ones do you like?

Maybelline Superstay 24H foundation swatches & review

You know, I don't think I've ever actually tried a Maybelline liquid foundation before, which is almost criminal. Superstay 24H (RRP $33.99NZD) is a reworking of their classic Superstay formula, made to last longer and wear better by moving with your skin. The coverage on this is great, I'd call it medium to buildable with a very natural finish. It sits really nicely on the skin and fades evenly, I didn't experience any breaking up, patchiness or oxidization over the day. My only critique is that there are just eight shades in the range right now, so finding your perfect match may be a challenge. Fortunately Light Beige was pretty spot on for me!

Maybelline Colorblur swatches & review

Rounding out the new launches are the Color Blurs (RRP $16.99NZD), velvety matte lip pencils with incredible colour pay off and a built in smudger to help you nail the ombre lip look. This application style has been incredibly popular in Korean beauty for ages so it's great to see Western brands taking notice and bringing us a more accessible version. There are five shades in the range and I've reviewed four of them already so don't forget to check out the post for more info.

Maybelline Colorblur swatches & review

Phew! That's a lot of new things to check out. Does anything tickle your fancy? I really want to check out the fifth Color Blur shade and the Superstay 24H Longwear concealer to see how well it pairs with the foundation - I'm scraping the bottom of my beloved tube of Fit Me concealer! I'd love to hear about your favourite Maybelline products. Maybelline is available nationwide at selected pharmacies, department stores and supermarkets.

Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara Review

Bobbi Brown recently introduced a new mascara to their ranks and it's appropriately named Eye Opening Mascara (RRP $57NZD). We all know mascara is great for making your eyes look more open but the massive brush on this baby will have you opening them extra wide just to maneuver it around your lashes.

Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara Review

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Once you get used to the brush size you'll find it's a 'no lash left behind' kind of deal: Eye Opening Mascara is great for getting right in the roots and grabbing every lash. Plus, it's very good at lifting your lashes, even my stubborn, straight short lashes found themselves coaxed up and out, with the curl lasting all day.

Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara Review

I'm also loving how intensely black this mascara is; combined with the curling effect, I've been reaching for it often lately. I notice a very small amount of flaking after around eleven hours wear, but it's something I can tolerate. There's no smudging or running, which is far more of a deal breaker for me.

Bobbi Brown Eye Opening Mascara Review

What I liked:
  • Curls/lifts lashes, and the effect lasts all day
  • No smudging or running
  • Intensely black
What I didn't like:
  • Small amount of flaking after eleven hours

Darling Girl Operation Sparkle Collection Swatches & Review

Since the Darling Girl Operation Sparkle collection arrived in my hot little hands, I've found myself binge watching the whole series including the Wonderland spin off, delving into themed fanfic and show theories. It's a rabbit hole that I blame Susan from Darling Girl entirely for sending me down.... yet I regret nothing. Except, perhaps, being so late to the party.

But I'm caught up now and I am enthralled. Darling Girl have released three collections based on the many, many characters in the Once Upon A Time universe now: Fairy Tale Romance, Wicked is Coming and now Operation Sparkle, which we'll be looking at today (but expect to see the other collections in time as well!). The collection name is a riff on the codenames Henry and Emma come up with for their adventures and missions and the shades here are all based on members of the Charming family.

The Darling Matte Balms come in a slimline tube with a variable weight of 2-2.5g (I assume the fluctuation depends on the pigments involved with each shade and room for human error as they are hand poured) and are $7USD. Mine is in a clamshell as it is a press sample.

Formula overview:
Darling Girl's eyeshadow formula is incredibly consistent. I've never come across a dud in the range (and I've accumulated an embarrassing amount); they are, on the whole, very pigmented and easy to work with. Some shades, especially the more glittery ones perform best over a sticky base but can certainly be used on their own.
The Darling Matte Balms are intended to provide the moisture of a balm with a velvety matte finish. They glide on beautifully and have full colour coverage. Depending on the intensity of the colour, they last between four to six hours.

Lipstick swatches are done on bare skin/lips. I take all of my photos with daylight bulbs for colour accuracy.

Snow

Snow White may look beautiful and delicate, but don't be fooled - she's a total badass who will loyally defend her family and kingdom to the death.

Snow is a pale baby pink with gold iridescence, when applied over a sticky base it takes on a stronger pink tone. Darling Girl's highlights are always great and Snow is no exception: it's soft, pigmented and easy to blend out. The sparkle isn't too chunky, so it also makes a great cheekbone highlight.

Charming

Prince David is better known as Charming, the nickname given to him by Snow White on their first meeting. He does indeed exude charm, as you might expect of a handsome prince (however humble his beginnings).

Charming is my favourite eyeshadow from this collection, it's a light beige with heavy gold to green sparkle. I need to use it again, these pictures have me wondering why I haven't picked it up in a while! There is always some inevitable fall out with an eyeshadow as sparkly as this but it can be minimized by layering it over a sticky base like Darling Girl Glitter Glue. Lovers of sparkly neutrals definitely need this in their collection.

For this look I've used Charming all over the lid and layered over smoked out black liner on the lower lashline. Snow is on the inner corner, #breaktheinternet is on the crease and I've used the LORAC Pro palette to deepen the crease further,  The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.
On my cheeks and lips I'm wearing Right Meow Baby Blush and Snuggle In Sweetie, It's Cold Out There Baby Blush as a highlight.

The Savior?

Darling Girl The Savior? Eyeshadow Swatches & Review

The daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, Emma Swan constantly struggles with her identity as The Savior, so the question mark at the end of this eyeshadow's name seems apt!

Darling Girl The Savior? Eyeshadow Swatches & Review

Darling Girl The Savior? Eyeshadow Swatches & Review

The Savior? is a dark reddened brown with red-violet sparks and a semi-matte base. It darkens up quite a lot over a sticky base and can be a little tricky to blend over one, so I'd recommend using it alone - I didn't heed my own advice and used a sticky base in the look below. Consequently I couldn't quite get the crease blended out smoothly. No fault of the eyeshadow, simple user error! It's such a lovely versatile chocolate-cherry shade, I need to try it on the lid for a dark brown smokey eye, or foiled as an eyeliner.

I also used Slave For Sensation from the Matte I'd Like To Find collection as a transition shade and The Savior? in the crease. The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies. On my cheeks is another Darling Girl gem, Tartelette Inner Glow blush.

Truest Believer

Henry, the biological son of Emma and the adopted son of Regina Mills, is the catalyst for bringing Emma back to Storybrooke and into her role as Savior. His faith in himself and others and power of imagination make his the heart of the Truest Believer.

Truest Believer is a warm pinky coral - I definitely need a full size tube of this, the matte finish and light pinky hue keep Truest Believer very wearable for any occasion. It applies smoothly, has excellent colour pay off and wears for four hours on me without being drying. The Darling Matte Balms smell lightly like tropical fruit to my nose.

MAC Monday: At Your Leisure Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

Today's MAC Monday is a bit of an odd one, because I honestly don't know much at all about this lipstick! I found this Mineralize lipstick, At Your Leisure, on Trade Me and was intrigued when a quick Google for swatches only turned up a handful of results, mostly from Asian bloggers and a listing on the Malaysian MAC site, although it no longer seems to be there. I suspect it may have been an Asian exclusive shade, I know there have been a few of those as the Mineralize lipstick formula has been very popular in Asian countries. I just wish I could find out more about this elusive beauty!

MAC Monday: At Your Leisure Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

At Your Leisure was my first Mineralize lipstick and I was quickly enamoured by the magnetic closure on the cap; lifting the lid slightly and letting it snap back into place is endlessly, childishly amusing. The tube is very wide, making it unable to fit in the dividers of my acrylic storage trays which is somewhat annoying, but not a dealbreaker.

MAC Monday: At Your Leisure Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

MAC Monday: At Your Leisure Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

At Your Leisure is a gold shimmered, warm medium coral shade with semi opaque colour pay off. The Mineralize formula is an absolute pleasure to apply and wear, it glides on smoothly and feels very hydrating. At Your Leisure lasted four hours on me which is consistent with the glossier formula and I was happy that the gold sparkle didn't add any noticeable texture or go wandering about my face, as can sometimes happen with glittery lipsticks!

MAC Monday: At Your Leisure Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Mostly opaque colour pay off
  • Hydrating
  • Wore for four hours
  • The glitter doesn't add texture or migrate outside the lip line
What I didn't like:
  • The wide tube doesn't fit in standard acrylic storage dividers

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Hustle, Sequin, Kimono and Rebel Swatches & Review

ColourPop! Their Super Shock Shadows rocked the beauty world with their unique texture and wallet friendly pricing when they debuted and I, like many others, have not been able to get enough of them since. It's an odd theme that it takes me a long time to blog about a product I'm obsessing over, simply because I'm so busy using it that I don't want to put it away in the 'ready for review' box for a single moment! But I finally sucked it up and I'm ready to show you the first four colours I purchased.

I grabbed these from a Facebook group lightly used so that I could see whether the formula worked for me before committing to the hefty shipping costs involved in a ColourPop order, so they don't have their boxes, but brand new ones come boxed. ColourPop eyeshadows are housed in a glossy white screwtop pot with a holographic logo. ColourPop advise that the jars need to be kept tightly shut to prevent the eyeshadow from drying out.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Hustle, Sequin, Kimono and Rebel Swatches & Review

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
You've probably heard everyone and their cat describe the texture of Colourpop's eyeshadows already :D But they have a malleable consistency like wet clay - should you press a finger into the eyeshadow you'll leave a hollow, it doesn't spring back or cling like a mousse, nor does it resist like a cream or powder. And of course, it's endlessly amusing to prod at! Because of the wetness of the formula it is important to keep the lid tightly shut to prevent the product drying out. Even so, they have a fairly short official shelf life, with ColourPop advising that their eyeshadows will last three years unopened and a year after being opened. I've now had these a little over a year and there appears to be no difference in quality than when I first got them, so it seems ColourPop are being pretty conservative.

There are seven different finishes in the SuperShock range: Glitter Sheer, Satin, Matte, Metallic, Ultra-Metallic, Pearlized and Pressed Pigments; I have a mixture of Pearlized, Metallic and Matte shades to show you today. Many of the Pearlized and Metallic shades contain glitter which is prone to fall out so applying these shades with a finger or a flat shader brush works best to minimise this and press the glitter into place. The Mattes can be applied with any brushes and are easy to blend out seamlessly. Across the board, everything I have tried from ColourPop has had excellent colour pay off, but what really impresses me is how budge-proof they are. They take a few seconds to set and then remain crease proof for the duration of wear - long time readers will know I have ridiculously oily eyelids that laugh in the face of most primers and eyeshadows, so the lasting power on these blew me away. I even put Sequin on the back of my hand and rubbed at it with my finger once it was set, using increasingly hard pressure, and it didn't smear or fade at all. Pretty much the only transfer was a small amount of glitter on my finger.

Hustle

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Hustle Swatches & Review

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Hustle Swatches & Review

Hustle is described as a burgundy violet with a Matte finish, which sums it up perfectly. This applies and blends out really nicely - it's easy to overlook the mattes inbetween all the glittery, metallic goodness ColourPop have on offer, but Hustle reminds me that I definitely need to check out more of them. I think this would make a beautiful cheek colour on deeper complexions too.

Sequin

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Sequin Swatches & Review

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Sequin Swatches & Review

Sequin is a 'copper penny-like shade with silver and gold glitter' in a Metallic finish. It. Is. Everything. If you love coppers and rose golds, which it pulls toward on me, you need this in your life now. Sequin is best applied with your fingers because there's a lot of glittery goodness in there and it will fall out like crazy if not pressed into place. Even so, I did notice continuing fall out throughout the day, but the colour and finish made up for it in my book. If fall out drives you nuts though, it may be a deal breaker.

Kimono

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Kimono Swatches & Review

Kimono is a darkened cornflower blue with silver, purple and blue glitters. I don't usually go in for blues - they really don't suit me! -  but I have to concede, this is gorgeous. Unfortunately it appears to have been discontinued, so you'll have to prowl Glambot, blog sales and Facebook sales groups if you want to get your hands on it. As jam-packed with glitter as Kimono is, it works best when patted on with a flat synthetic brush or fingers to keep the glitter in place. Though brilliantly pigmented, it still blends out easily.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Kimono Swatches & Review

I've paired Kimono with Femme Fatale Construct on the lid here, Too Faced Teddy Bear & Heaven on the crease and to blend out, and these Born Pretty store false eyelashes.

Rebel

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Rebel Swatches & Review

Rebel is a khaki green in a Matte finish. This was part of Shaaanxo's collaboration quad of colours, all of which have unfortunately been discontinued. I don't love the colour of Rebel on me (although perhaps that's just my dubious colour placement below) but I definitely couldn't fault the performance, it was a breeze to work with. Another one to track down on Glambot or similar if you love it!

I've used Rebel on the crease here, with Darling Girl Naughty Olive Wonder Wand on the lid and Darling Girl Eclipse on the lower lashline. The lashes are these ones from Born Pretty Store.

What I liked:
  • Excellent colour pay off
  • Low price
  • Easy to blend
  • Budge proof once set!
What I didn't like:
  • I experience a lot of fall out with some of the glittery shades.

Blogger Link Up | A Very Naked FOTD

I'm teaming up with a bunch of lovely ladies from #NZbloggers to share my go to look using the perennially popular Urban Decay Naked 2 palette today! This is a palette I thrashed for months after finally buying it, having previously loved the MUA dupe, Undress Me Too, to a cracked and crumbling death. Then, as is often inevitable with makeup addicts, new eyeshadow palettes came along to turn my head and poor Naked 2 got relegated to the back of the drawer. So it's been nice to unearth it and rediscover my old favourite shades for this link up!

Blogger Link Up | A Very Naked FOTD

Although there are twelve shades in Naked 2, all of which are very good, I always find myself coming back to the first six: Foxy, Half Baked, Bootycall, Chopper, Tease and Snakebite. They're perfect for creating the warm bronzed eyes I'm so fond of and pack a lot of sparkle. The shimmer does unfortunately create a bit of fall out - Chopper in particular is chronic for it - but I've found the best way to minimize this and create a beautiful molten metal effect is to layer the shadows over an adhesive base like Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy.

Blogger Link Up | A Very Naked FOTD

The key to using a sticky base is laying down a regular primer and applying your matte shades first. Mattes don't play well with a sticky base and most eyeshadows are difficult to blend over it, so you want to lay down all the groundwork for your crease and any darker shading on the outer V first. Then you can simply apply a thin layer of your sticky base and after giving it a few seconds to become tacky, pat your shimmery eyeshadow over top. The base grabs onto the glitter and sparkle to intensify the effect, as if you've foiled your eyeshadow and it helps to keep it anchored all day, too.

Blogger Link Up | A Very Naked FOTD

Here I've used Tease on the crease, Foxy to blend out, Snakebite on the outer V and lower lashline, Chopper on the centre of the kid and centre of lower lashline (over Snakebite). Half Baked is on the inner third of the lid and Bootycall is on the inner corner. I then lined and lightly smudged my upper lashline with Maybelline Color Tattoo in Dramatic Black* and used Ardell Brow Pomade in Medium Brown* to carve out some power brows. On my lashes I'm wearing Collection Longer Lash Lengthening Mascara* topped off with Ardell #110 lashes*.

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Enchanted One & Mystical Lipsticks Swatches & Review

Do you remember the crazy hype when the Alluring Aquatic collection came out? The shiny aqua packaging, studded with faux waterdrops captured the attention of makeup lovers when it came out in May 2014. It certainly shook the cobwebs from my MAC collector instincts, which had been lying dormant after my eldest son was born. I just missed Alluring Aquatic on counters but gradually picked up two of the lipsticks, so let's take a look at them today!

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Enchanted One & Mystical Lipsticks Swatches & Review

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Enchanted One & Mystical Lipsticks Swatches & Review

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
There were five lipsticks in the Alluring Aquatic collection, four new colours and one repromote (Pet Me, Please, which first appeared in Fabulous Felines, 2010). The lipstick finishes in this collection were a mixture of cremesheens, a lustre, a frost and a matte. Enchanted One is a matte and Mystical is a cremesheen; two of my favourite MAC formulas!  Cremesheens offer semi-opaque colour payoff and are generally comfortable to wear while mattes are super pigmented and velvety in texture. MAC lipsticks have a vanilla scent.

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Enchanted One Lipstick Swatches & Review

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Enchanted One Lipstick Swatches & Review

Enchanted One is described as a 'mid-tone neutral pink'. On me, it's a warm peachy nude which I love - it goes with just about anything! The matte finish is smooth and creamy, it doesn't tug or drag during application and it lasted an impressive five hours without being drying.

MAC Monday | Alluring Aquatics - Mystical Lipstick Swatches & Review

Mystical is a 'mid-tone creamy rose' with a cremesheen finish. Leaning on the brownish side of rose, the glossy and semi opaque finish softens the impact of the colour so it would work on a lot of skintones. I quite like Mystical but Enchanted One has rather hogged all the glory in this case!

What I liked:
  • Great colour pay off
  • Wear time was between four and five hours
  • Non drying formula
What I didn't like:
  • Nothing!

Did you grab anything from this collection when it was available? I'd still love to get my hands on Goddess of the Sea lipstick and Aphrodite's Shell bronzer one day.

Future MAC Swatches & Review

MAC are challenging you to reinvent the rules of highlighting with a new Mineralize collection filled with shimmering products for an ultra-luminous complexion. Seriously - if sparkle and glow are your scene, you're going to be in absolute heaven perusing the offerings from Future MAC! The collection launched at MAC counters nationwide on the 11th of April and I have a selection from the range to share with you today.

The Zone

Future MAC - The Zone Mineralize Glass Swatches & Review

Future MAC - The Zone Mineralize Glass Swatches & Review

If you can't bear the thick, tacky viscosity of MAC's regular lipglasses, you've gotta try the Mineralize Glass (RRP $58NZD). Bearing the same (IMO) great vanilla scent as the bulk of MAC's lip products, the Mineralize Glass formula is thin, lightweight and nonsticky but feels just as cushiony and hydrating as the original Lipglass. I need more of these!

They come in a long tube which is flared like a rather subtle hourglass. The applicator is a paddle shaped sponge which has a slightly concave curve to the breadth of it, helping it to hug the lips as you apply. I find this applicator style prevents you from overapplying, as more of the product is held back than with a traditional doefoot, but this can be a bit annoying as it takes several pulls to pick up enough gloss to apply evenly.

Future MAC - The Zone Mineralize Glass Swatches & Review

Future MAC - The Zone Mineralize Glass Swatches & Review

Future MAC - The Zone Mineralize Glass Swatches & Review

The Zone is described as a 'dirty mauve with pearl'. The mauve is more visible in the tube; when applied it's more of a sheer warm brown and has beautiful golden-green shimmer, very easy to wear and it doesn't settle into lip lines. The Zone wore for two and a half hours on me, the shine fading fast while the shimmer lingered, and it was hydrating.

Cybernaut

Future MAC - Cybernaut Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

Future MAC - Cybernaut Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

MAC's Mineralize Lipstick (RRP $58NZD) formula is quite new to me but I really like what I've tried so far. They come in hourglass-esque tubes like the Mineralize Glass, only more short and squat, and the cap is magnetized: lifting the lid slightly and letting it snap back into place will keep me amused for an embarassing length of time. The tube is very wide, making it unable to fit in the dividers of my acrylic storage trays which is somewhat annoying, but not a dealbreaker.

Future MAC - Cybernaut Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

Future MAC - Cybernaut Mineralize Lipstick Swatches & Review

Cybernaut is described as a 'neutral pink'. It's a pale pinky nude in the same vein as Hue from the regular permanent line, although a touch pinker and more opaque. I really love Cybernaut, the touch of extra pink makes it easier to wear than some of MAC's other pale nudes and the Mineralize formula feels lovely and hydrating on. This lasted five hours on me, settling into lip lines somewhat and more noticeably where my lips were drier.

Otherearthly

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

The updated Mineralize Skinfinish (RRP $64NZD) packaging always looks rather UFO-like to me. Perfectly suited then to a futuristic themed collection! As with the lipstick, the Skinfinish has a magnetic closure and comes with a clear plastic insert as additional protection for the powder. Otherearthly has a raised design with the different colour sections having slightly different heights and dips between each portion.

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

Otherearthly is a mixture of bronze, pink and silver sections which combine to create a beautiful oyster pink shade. The segments are large enough that you could pick up individual colours with a tapered highlighting brush, like my personal favourite, the NARS Yachiyo brush. Each colour is strong enough on its own, too; they easily double as eyeshadows, making Otherearthly an exceptionally versatile MSF. The formula is wonderful, Otherearthly is easily sheered out or built up and is smooth and flattering to skin, not powdery. The lasting power isn't to be sniffed at either, still clinging on, albeit a touch faded, after ten hours.

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

I've paired Otherearthly (worn as a cheek highlight) here with Notoriously Morbid Giant contour powder and Numerology blush. I'm also wearing MAC Blooming Lovely from the Give Me Liberty of London collection (2010) and Urban Decay Naked 2 on eyes, which I recently did a post about.

Future MAC - Otherearthly Mineralize Skinfinish Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Otherearthly wore for ten hours
  • Otherearthly is flattering on the skin and blends out or builds opacity easily
  • Cybernaut wore for five hours
  • All of the products have smooth & even colour pay off
  • Mineralize Glass formula is non sticky
  • Both the Mineralize lipstick & Mineralize Glass formulas are hydrating
What I didn't like:
  • The Mineralize Glass applicator is shaped so that you need to re-dip several times to get enough product
  • Cybernaut pulls into lip lines slightly

MAC Versicolour Stains - Ceaseless Energy and Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy and Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

Sick of reapplying lipstick throughout the day? Versicolour (RRP $58NZD) is a new, permanent formula from MAC marrying gloss and stain in one colour-saturated formula. They're similar to YSL's much loved Glossy Stains and the plethora of dupes that formula spawned and are definitely worth a peek for anyone who loves lasting colour without the maintenance. There are currently sixteen shades in the line up and I have two to show you today!

MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy and Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

Versicolour Stains come in cylindrical tubes capped with MAC's usual shimmer flecked black finish. In the middle there's a clear section to show the colour and they have a long, slim doefoot applicator that tapers slightly on one side and is flat on the other. The tube is just a smidge too big to comfortably fit in standard acrylic lipstick stands.

MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy and Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
Versicolours have a sweet fruity scent with hints of vanilla. The texture is gel like and pretty easy to control with the included applicator - I was able to apply my swatches directly from the tube with no clean up or lip brushes involved. It's possible to apply these in a thin single layer for less intense colour, although you'd have to be quite careful to apply evenly. I found two coats gave me the most even colour pay off along with the intensity I wanted.

MAC call the Versicolours an 'all in one fluid formula that melts onto lips for a full-on glassy shine that lasts and lasts and lasts. Infused with emollient oils, its creamy, lightweight texture stays bright, lustrous and so comfortable without ever cracking or peeling.' You do need to be precise in your application because once applied, the Versicolours aren't coming off without a series of makeup removers (I used ZA Deep Cleansing Oil, Tosowoong Nothing Is Impossible and Clinique Clarifying Lotion in succession when I was swatching!), and time. The shine begins to fade after three to four hours, or as soon as you eat or drink, but the stain itself lasted well over eight hours on me while still being strong and even, and the remains were visible the following day. They're not drying, but they weren't comfortable the whole time either, feeling steadily more tight and clingy over the duration of wear. MAC do caution on their website that Versicolour Stains may not be suitable for those with very dry or sensitive lips.

MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy Swatches & Review

Ceaseless Energy is described as a 'bright raspberry pink'. It was slightly more translucent than Resilient Rouge, giving the colour a beautiful jelly-like effect. It wore for eight hours on me and the remaining stain persisted overnight.

MAC Versicolour - Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

Resilient Rouge is a bright cherry red. This is a brilliant choice if you love a red lip but hate maintaining it! It lasted nine and half hour on me and as with Ceaseless Energy, there was still lingering stain the next day.

MAC Versicolour - Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • Buildable colour pay off; opaque in two coats
  • Formula is easy to control and apply precisely
  • Weartime comfortably reaches eight hours and lingering stain remains overnight
  • No feathering or migration
  • Non drying
What I didn't like:
  • Feels clingy and tight on the lips towards the end of wear
  • Hard to remove - I needed to use several types of makeup remover to remove it completely

Collection Cosmetics - 2016 New Releases Swatches & Review

Who says you need to leave glowing skin to the summer months? I have some new products from Collection Cosmetics to show you today which are great for a year round glow, along with new shades in their existing products. I really enjoy Collection's range because they're not too hard on the wallet and they're stocked exclusively at Countdown supermarkets, making them honorary groceries :D

Collection Cosmetics Gorgeous Glow Blush Block & Bronzing Block Swatches & Review

These Gorgeous Glow Blush & Bronzing Blocks are a recent addition to Collection's range and they're an excellent option for anyone who loves Bobbi Brown's Shimmer Bricks but doesn't want to drop a wad of cash on them - Collection's version retails for just $16.99NZD. The colour pay off they deliver is sheer, buildable and easy to blend, with the mix of colours allowing you to customise the final result. With the Blush Block, for instance, I'll sometimes use all the colours mixed together as a blush and other times just use the middle three as a highlighter. These last around nine hours on me.

The Blush Block is a gorgeous mix of pink and coral shades, most of which have a duochrome sheen added - gold in most cases, but the ivory shade has a pretty pink shift. The strips are really too small to be used individually, though as mentioned above, you can mix and match the final colour by concentrating your brush on different segments. Altogether the different shades make up a light coral shimmery pink. The level of shimmer present is quite flattering and didn't cause any emphasis of skin texture.

The Bronzing Block has an array of softened gold and warm brown tones, coming together to create a shimmery light bronze tone which would suit fair-medium skintones. The shimmer is certainly present, giving a soft, luminescent glow to skin - though if you loathe any sparkle in your bronzers, it's best to steer clear of this one. I think all of the colours mixed together could pass as a highlighter on deeper complexions, while the two topmost colour strips iwould make a pretty highlight too on paler skin - next on my list of things to try!

I'm wearing both the Bronzing Block and Blush Block here, accompanied by Makeup Revolution's contour palette.

Collection Cosmetics Lasting Perfection Foundation - 1 Porcelain Swatches & Review

I've used Collection's Lasting Perfection (RRP $25.49NZD) foundation before and really loved it, but unfortunately the colour I chose at the time was just too dark for me (Ivory). They've since updated their shade range and added in some lighter shades, including Porcelain, which I believe is now the lightest in the range. This is a multi-tasking foundation, promising to prime, conceal, cover, smooth, protect and mattify. Phew!

Before & after Lasting Perfection foundation (no concealer or powder)

Lasting Perfection blends into skin nicely without the aid of a primer and gives medium coverage and a matte finish. It lasts most of the day on me, with some shine appearing on my t-zone after around seven hours; after that it slowly fades away over a few more hours without visible breakdown or separation of product. Sadly, Porcelain isn't a perfect match for my NC15 skin, but it errs on the side of passable - hopefully Collection will expand the shade range again in the future!

Collection Cosmetics Lasting Colour Lipstick - Rose Wood Swatches & Review

To be honest, I'm a little sad that Collection revamped their entire colour range in the Lasting Colour lipstick (RRP $16.50NZD) line instead of just adding in new colours - there were some amazing reds in there! Still, there are some fabulous new colours to be found in the eleven replacement shades, including Rose Wood, a pretty warm nude.

Collection's lipstick formula goes on super smoothly and has medium-buildable colour pay off. They promise to make your lips 20% more hydrated - I didn't notice any hydrating properties, but it wasn't drying either, just an all round comfortable lipstick. Rose Wood lasted three hours on me.

Love You, Mum! | Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Mother's Day is just two sleeps away! Have you found the perfect gift yet? Still on the hunt? I've got your back! Browse the gift guide to find beauty related gift suggestions for every mum.

Makeup Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Makeup Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Is your mum completely beauty obsessed? Or does she just wants something that is both easy and lovely to use? There are so many lovely makeup products out there that it can be hard narrowing things down, but I have a short list to make it a bit easier.

Let's start with a base! L'Oreal's Nude Magique Cushion (RRP $33.99NZD) foundation is pretty new on the market but it's won me over pretty quickly, with its portable format and beautiful dewy finish. If you've never heard of cushion foundations before, they're a sponge drenched with foundation housed in a compact with an included applicator sponge. Historically dewy foundations have often meant that you're trading luminosity for coverage, but Nude Magique pulls both off beautifully! I'll be doing a full review for this, so stay tuned.

Not pictured: Estee Lauder Perfectionist (RRP $80NZD) is one of my favourite foundations for older skin as it's flattering to skin texture, delivers generous coverage and weartime and is infused with Perfectionist Serum. Another one I'm enjoying from the new wave of skincare infused foundations is Bobbi Brown Skin Nourishing Glow Foundation (RRP $110NZD) which is unbelieveably luminous while still giving medium-buildable coverage.

I fell in love with Lancome Blush Subtil in Brun Roche (RRP $79NZD) as soon as the brush touched my cheek; the Blush Subtil formula is soft, silky, pigmented and it blends seamlessly for the perfect flush. Brun Roche is one of those flatter-all shades, a soft tawny rose, you really can't go wrong with it!

Makeup Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Benefit also have multi-tasking mums covered with their line of BeneTints, which are liquid lip and cheek stains that last all day. I do so love matching cheeks and lips so I'm all over this! I have the Cha Cha Tint (RRP $57ND) which is a lovely bright mango-coral that can be applied sheerly for a natural look or built up for stronger colour. If you like the look of this one, I did spot Smith & Caugheys have an online exclusive Cha Cha Charmers set containing a full size tint and two mini tinted balms for the same price as the full size Cha Cha Tint on its own. Score!

Eyebrows becoming more sparse over time as we get older is a complaint I often hear, which is why Benefit Gimme Brow (RRP $45NZD) is pretty darn great. It's a tinted brow gel with fibres to fill in any gaps in your brows, while defining them and keeping them in place. I have unruly eyebrows which laugh in the face of many brow gels, so a strong hold which still looks natural makes me very happy indeed!

On a side note, Benefit are running a really cool promotion at the moment where you bring your mum (or convince your child to bring you) to a Benefit counter, treat her to a brow service and she'll come away with a goody bag of Benefit products! I am wishing there was a Benefit counter in Wellington to drag my sons into right now - at the moment they have counters at Smith & Caughey's Newmarket & Queen Street in Auckland and Ballantyne's in Christchurch.

Recently my mum and I were looking at some eyeshadow palettes and she asked me 'how do you tell which colour goes where?!' YSL have taken out the mystery with their 5-Colour Ready-To-Wear Couture Palettes (RRP $120NZD), which come with a pamphlet defining the purpose of each colour in the palette and diagrams suggesting colour placement. It's an excellent starting point if you're not confident with eyeshadow application or just want to shake up your makeup routine. The pictured palette is Saharienne, a set of neutral-warm tones that work beautifully for sheer washes of colour or built up for a more defined look.
Extra for experts: one of my favourite bloggers, Makeup Box, has an excellent post with more examples of eyeshadow placement using duos, trios and quintets.

Makeup Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

It wouldn't be a beauty gift guide without me talking about lip products, would it? Bold mattes or creamy, moisturising lipsticks are a great way to go, especially in tried and tested formulas that don't feather or migrate - particularly important if your mum has fine lines forming around her lips which some lipsticks like to creep into. I've always struggled with these and feathering is not something I can tolerate at all!

Bobbi Brown Nourishing Lip Color (RRP $54NZD) is a super creamy new oil infused formula which actually launches the day after Mother's Day, presenting a unique gift idea! Why not book your mum a Cheek & Lips Makeup Lesson at your nearest Bobbi Brown counter, which Bobbi Brown are offering free to celebrate the launch of Nourishing Lip Color. After the lesson, when she's been able to try out the new lipstick and pick up some tips and tricks, treat her to a selection of her favourite Bobbi products! The shade I have is Pink Slipper, an easy to wear pink tinged coral which glides on like a dream. Look out for swatches coming up soon!

I tried Elizabeth Arden's Ceramide Ultra Lipsticks (RRP $52NZD) for the first time recently and immediately kicked myself for not giving them a closer look before. They glide on so nicely and feel wonderfully hydrating. Furthering the appeal is the luxe gold packaging, capped with the iconic Red Door logo. Your mum will definitely feel spoilt opening one of these babies even before she tries out the colour! There are so many colours and finishes in the Ceramide Ultra range and they've just released six new shades, including the pictured colours, Violetini and Blushing Pink, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding the perfect shade.

Rounding off the lipsticks are the Maybelline Color Blurs (RRP $14.99NZD) which I have talked about before and will continue to go on singing the praises of! They're richly pigmented, apply easily and have a velvety matte finish to help them last for hours. The pictured colours are (left to right) I Like To Mauve It (a gorgeous nude option for those who don't like brown based nudes), Orange Ya Glad and Plum, Please (both perfect for the mum who can't get enough of a bold lip!).

Nail Polish Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Nail Polish Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Nail polish is a wonderful thing; - no matter the price tag on the bottle, a manicure always feels like a luxurious pamper session. Grab a bottle of Mum's favourite colour and bundle it with everything she needs for a home manicure!

Essie's nail polishes are a lovely treat and their colour range is filled with a healthy mix of 'safe' and on-trend shades: here I have In The Lobby from the new Leggy Legend collection and Chinchilly, Midnight Cami and Licorice from the permanent range (RRP $22.99NZD each). If brighter shades are more your thing I highly recommend Play Date, Bikini So Teeny, Splash of Grenadine and Cute As A Button (which was actually my first Essie polish!).

On the other end of the budget, but no less awesome, are Australis' Nail Colours which I've been a fan of for years. They are incredibly pigmented and err on the thicker side, which I quite like in a nail polish - makes them easier for me to control! Australis also recently lowered their price which is incredible when they were already some of the most affordable nail polishes in NZ - they're just $8.50NZD now! I've got Holy Kale and In The Buff, two fab new neutrals that have recently launched.

Skincare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Skincare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Oh skincare, where to begin? First of all, know your audience when opting for skincare as a gift. My mother-in-law wants as many promises about youth and rejuvenation on the bottle as possible, my mother just wants to know the basic function of the product with no mention of age or wrinkles, thank you very much, what are you trying to say?

So! We're divided into two camps here and there's no right or wrong; it just comes down to preference! Luckily for you, I play the field and have favourites from each.

Skincare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Oasis Beauty and Trilogy are brands I love because their focus is on healthy skin with natural ingredients and they're very straight up about what each product is designed to do: it's right there on the bottle, with no jargon. Fruit Smoothie (RRP $39.90NZD) is a super effective face scrub and mask in one while Berry Tonic (RRP $34.90NZD) is lovely as a toner or a skin refresher throughout the day. If you'd like to try Oasis Beauty, you can receive three mini sized products from them for free by filling out their survey here.

Obviously it's clear I'm having a bit of a moment with toning sprays by including Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner (RRP $29.90NZD) in the mix too but I'm not even sorry. Like Berry Tonic, it's a great pick me up for your skin; I always have it at my office desk, especially in the warmer months! Last year I took it to Great Barrier Island on a family holiday, where it gets stinkingly hot, and my mother-in-law and best friend were very quickly converted to this lovely refresher.

Also worth mentioning is Benefit It's Potent! Eye Cream (RRP $64NZD) which is a lush wee pot of hydrating goodness. Potent is right, it feels like it's working wonders as soon as you pat on the moussey texture; I like that it isn't greasy or shiny at all and it works to brighten undereye circles.

Garnier Micellar Water continues its reign as the bargain, do it all cleansing champ (RRP $13.99 for 400ml or $6.99 for 125ml travel size) and there's a new variation for combination/oily skin (which is meeeeeeeeee!) out now called Pure Active. Huzzah! Cleansing couldn't get any more simple than this, although the term micellar water sounds complicated - Labmuffin explains it all in this great post. All you have to do is soak a cotton pad in micellar water and swipe it across your face to remove your makeup and cleanse in one step, with no rinsing required. Perfect for the mum who doesn't want a complicated nighttime skincare regime!

Skincare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

On the other side we have the heavy hitters, for the mum who wants to know her skincare is doing everything it can to minimize the signs of aging.

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Eye Treatment (RRP $95NZD) is an eye cream I've been using for close to a year now and I really do see a difference in the texture around my eyes due to this little wonder. Before the skin was dry and had a pronounced pebbled texture, which has been hugely reduced. Highly recommend!

Also from Clinique is the new Scultpwear Lift and Contour Serum for Face and Neck (RRP NZD $114 for 30ml or $160 for 50ml) which I'm really excited about! The neck is one of the first areas to show age because it's so often neglected in our skincare routine - forunately there's a rising trend in targeted skincare to combat this! Sculptwear Lift and Contour promises to be a hydrating serum that absorbs quickly and provides skin with an immediate tightening sensation. I haven't been using it long enough to properly discuss results but so far it's doing what it says it does - I'm a fan!

Longtime users of facial oils must be cackling at the rest of us catching up but I'm thrilled that we are because more and more great quality oils are popping up in every price range all the time. L'Oreal Age Perfect Extraordinary Oil is just one of those and is matched with the Age Perfect Extraordinary Oil Cream (RRP $39.99NZD each). The cream is great if you find oils too messy or dislike their texture, although it must be said that the Extraordinary Oil is a pleasure to use, it sinks into the skin quickly and neither of them leave any kind of residue.

Nighttime cleansing is so important to prepare your skin for the other steps in your skincare regime, so Estee Lauder have brought out their Advanced Night Cleansing Foam (RRP $70NZD) which works to effectively remove makeup and cleanse your skin. All the while, it's giving you a calming aromatic experience with a lavender and chamomile fragrance, putting you in the right mindset for sleep. It feels lovely on the skin, cleansing without leaving my skin feeling tight or stripped, just fresh and ready for the next step.

Garnier's Miracle Wakeup Cream (RRP $19,99NZD) is another wallet friendly option, promising to provide skin with 24 hours of hydration. Wowza! So far, I'm liking the super smooth texture it gives thanks to a healthy dose of glycerin, which is a common ingredient in face primers - I think this will double as a primer nicely. I'll be sure to report back when I've been able to experiment more!

Haircare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Haircare Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Haircare! This is something your mum may not treat herself to all that often. I know for me it's something I often forget about until I'm running really low, or am a bit scroogeish to buy the salon brands for myself. Which is why it's so nice to receive them for Mother's Day!

The L'Oreal Vitamino Color range (RRP from $28.50NZD) has everything you need to pamper and protect coloured hair including shampoo, conditioner, a protecting spray, a jelly-masque and even a CC cream for hair.

My hair loves the power of oils so I'm all over the Kerastase Elixir Ultime range (RRP $49-50NZD) most of which are suitable for all hair types, but there's a Beautifying Oil Mist especially for fine to normal hair types too - perfect if your mum has easily weighed down hair! They smell amazing too, like argan oil and coconut.

On the subject of fine hair, Matrix Biolage Anti-Static Spray (RRP $32.50) especially designed for those with fine hair as a leave in treatment which helps to control frizz and static while nourishing and detangling. Quadruple win!

Blowdrying is my latest hairstyling obsession, I absolutely love the body and volume I can achieve with a good blowdry! Remington's Shine Revival dryer set (RRP $159.99NZD) has just about all of the tools of the trade in one set, complete with argan oil shampoo and conditioner, sectioning clips, a round barrel brush and even a bag to keep them in. All you need to add is a heat protectant, like L'Oreal Supersleek Smoothing Blow Dry Mist (RRP $18.99NZD), which I love and have been using for ages. Or consider Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Treatment Primer (RRP $36.00NZD) which I'm particularly excited about playing with more, because there's not a lot more frustrating post blowdry than having it all bent out of shape overnight!

If you want to set that blow dry further, the Redken Triple Take 32 hairspray (RRP $36NZD) is incredible for its strong hold without the crunch. Ohhhh, how I dread the crunch! I can't believe how soft and touchable my hair still is even while anchored with Triple Take 32. It smells like orange blossom, jasmine and sandalwood too.
Bath Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Bath Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

You can never go wrong with something lovely for the bath or shower! Here are some options that are sure to make your mum smile.

LUSH's Mother's Day collection this year immediately won me over by bringing back Yummy Mummy Shower Cream (RRP $23.50 for 200g or $34,90 for 500g) and it's better than ever! I adore the scent, which is a mixture of Brazilian orange and geranium oil tempered with cocoa butter and have been hoarding my little bottle from last year. This purple wonder is filled with silver shimmer which last year settled at the bottom of the bottle quite a bit but seems to be much better suspended this year. I might need a back up!

If your mum loves roses you definitely need to check out The Body Shop's new British Rose range! Although I love roses, I don't usually enjoy rose scents; they're too powdery or heavy and often more overwhelming than the delicate fragrance of a real rose. The Body Shop however, have perfectly captured that delicacy and bottled it for you to enjoy in Shower Gel (RRP $16.50NZD), hand cream, bath foam, the new Instant Glow Body Essence (RRP $45NZD) and of course their cult body butter. It really is like smelling a real rose!

Bath Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Not to be forgotten in all the rose love is LUSH's Rose Bombshell (RRP $8.50NZD), again from the Mother's Day collection,, which is a redesign of last year's white version. Now it's all pink for possibly the prettiest bath ever and it's scented with Sicilian lemon, geranium, Turkish rose oil and rose absolute with a hidden core of rose petals waiting to be strewn around your tub as the bath bomb dissolves. If pink isn't your mum's thing, try Ladybug (RRP $9.90NZD), an adorable bubble bar which tints your bathwater vermillion red and smells of geranium and peppermint. You're never too old for a bubble bath! I had to pick up Sunrise soap (RRP $8.40 per 100g) from this collection too, as I just adore citrus scents, like the tangerine and mango in Sunrise.

Of course you shouldn't restrain yourself to limited editions, there's plenty of exciting stuff in the permanent range too! I bought The Comforter Shower Cream (RRP $13.50NZD for 100g, $23.50 for 250g, $34.90 for 500g) last week and am baffled as to how this sparkly pink confection escaped my notice for so long. It contains sweet cassis absolute, bergamot and cypress which smell like blackcurrant all mixed together. Heaven!

Lastly I can't forget a good scrub, and Bossy's Face & Body Coffee Scrub (RRP $18.50NZD for a pot, $18.00 for a refill bag) is currently holding the top dog position in my shower. A plain coffee scrub on its own has a strong scent which I enjoy in its own way, but Bossy's scrub has cocoa, peppermint, marigold and other lovely fragrances in it which compliment and lessen the coffee scent. Plus, they feel AMAZING - the oils linger on my skin for a while after the scrub has been washed until they sink in so that I come out of the shower barely needing any body creams. Love!

Candles Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

Candles Mother's Day 2016 Gift Guide

My luxury candle addiction is going strong, to the detriment of my wallet, so they topped my Mother's Day list this year and I'm sure your mum would love one too!

Ecoya brought out some new limited edition candles a wee while ago in the scents Double Vanilla & Cedarwood and Cherry Blossom and Tuberose (RRP $49.99NZD each) and they are both DIVINE. While I pick up the cherry blossom notes in Cherry Blossom & Tuberose, it also reminds me strongly of Persian Silk trees, and the one I used to climb at my primary school, scaling my way to the top and poking my head through the canopy of pink blossoms. It was magical, and each time I burn this candle I am transported back to that memory. Isn't scent amazing? Ecoya have also been running a promotion where you receive a free mini of their limited edition White Lily and Rosewood candle with the purchase of two Ecoya products. It's a soft, understated floral in a beveled frosted pink glass jar and is available full size too. For permanent Ecoya scents, I highly recommend Vanilla Bean and French Pear!

Finally, I honestly can't mention candles without bringing my all time favourite into it: Glasshouse Fragrances Tahaa. If your mum has a sweet tooth she'll love the heady vanilla caramel scent. I burned this while I was getting ready for my wedding, so it will always be special to me for that reason alone!

How's your Mother's Day shopping going? I hope this guide has helped!

Essence Haul Swatches & Review

Provided for review/

I never get tired of perusing the Essence stand at my local Farmers for some new gems from the range. There's always something else to try, and everything is so darn cheap! To celebrate the recent launch of their Facebook page, Essence sent me over a selection of products to try so whether you're new to the brand and not sure where to start or just want to explore more from the range hopefully this post will be helpful!

Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder 01 Natural swatches & review

If you've been on the hunt for a matte bronzer (I'll never understand why they can be such a mission to find!) then I definitely recommend checking out the Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder. It comes in two shades for lighter or darker skin and it's HUGE for what you pay (RRP $7.90NZD) - bigger than the palm of my hand. Excellent if you like to dust your shoulders and decolletage with a little bronzer too! It wears for around ten hours on me and smells faintly of coconut, plus it applies and blends it beautifully without looking overdone, so a great big win in my book.

Essence Sun Club Shimmer Bronzing Powder - 20 Suntanned swatches & review

If sparkly bronzers have you running for the hills, the Shimmer Bronzing Powder (RRP $6.75NZD) might just change your mind. It comes in just one shade, 'Suntanned', which is labelled as being for darker skin, but I thought it looked fine on me (pale with neutral-warm tones). Although undeniably shimmery in the pan and arm swatch, it wasn't noticeably sparkly on my face, instead mimicking the slight sheen of skin and looking quite natural. It lasted about eight hours on me.

Essence All About Bronze eyeshadow palette swatches & review

Essence All About Bronze eyeshadow palette swatches & review

I've always had great luck with Essence's eyeshadow formula; their soft and silky texture and excellent colour pay off belie their low price in a big way. The All About Bronze Palette is no different, containing eight highly pigmented shades in an array of gold, bronze, champagne and warm brown hues. My only gripe is that every single eyeshadow in this palette is intensely shimmery and in my opinion, it desperately needs some mattes to anchor a one-palette eyeshadow look - used alone, they look quite muddy. Still, it's incredible value for the RRP of $8.95NZD and Essence have a sizeable selection of single eyeshadows and other palettes to pair All About Bronze with.

Essence Liquid Lipstick swatches & review

These Essence Liquid Lipsticks look and feel more like a gloss than a traditional lipstick, with all the comfort and hydration that goes with a gloss formula. The wear time, though, is more in keeping with a lipstick, lasting just under five hours on me - not too shabby at all, particularly for light colours. Their packaging and formula lead me to believe they're Essence's take on Dior Fluid Sticks (which reminds me that I have one of those to review, too!). They have a light, sweet fragrance and an RRP of $5.65NZD.

Essence Liquid Lipstick - Almost Real swatches & review

The colours I have are Almost Real, a light caramel nude and Color Party, a pretty cool toned baby pink.

Essence Liquid Lipstick - Color Party swatches & review

Essence Make Me Brow Blondy Brows swatches & review

Make Me Brow is famously known as a dupe for Benefit Gimme Brow - a tinted brow gel with fibres to fill in and volumize brows - and is a fraction of the price at just $5.20NZD (versus $45NZD). I find the formula to be very comparable, Benefit's is a touch more opaque and their brush is smaller, but the Essence brush is perfectly serviceable too, and they apply and wear to much the same effect. I have the shade Blondy Brows, which gives a very natural, groomed effect.

Essence is available from a limited number of Farmers stores, which you can find listed here, and at Pricewise in stores and online.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - I Heart This, On the Rocks, Mooning and Cricket Swatches & Review

I'm slowly catching up on reviewing my ColourPop Super Shock Shadows - just as I've bought some more, of course! The four I have to show you today are the first ones I bought new from their website (I reviewed some I bought in a local sales group last month) a bit over a year ago - whoops!! So there are lots of extra packaging shots to show you what to expect.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - I Heart This, On the Rocks, Mooning and Cricket Swatches & Review

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - I Heart This, On the Rocks, Mooning and Cricket Swatches & Review

ColourPop's eyeshadows come boxed, although I confess to being a little annoyed that they don't have the name printed on them. I am a hoarder of packaging and have taken to storing some items in their boxes but because I can't readily identify the shade from the Super Shock Shadow's outerpackaging it's a waste of time in this case.
My moaning aside, the eyeshadows are housed in a glossy white screwtop pot with a holographic logo. ColourPop advise that the jars need to be kept tightly shut to prevent the eyeshadow from drying out.
ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - I Heart This, On the Rocks, Mooning and Cricket Swatches & Review

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - I Heart This, On the Rocks, Mooning and Cricket Swatches & Review

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
ColourPop's Super Shock Shadows have a malleable consistency like wet clay - should you press a finger into the eyeshadow you'll leave a hollow, it doesn't spring back or cling like a mousse, nor does it resist like a cream or powder.

There are seven different finishes in the SuperShock range: Glitter Sheer, Satin, Matte, Metallic, Ultra-Metallic, Pearlized and Pressed Pigments; I have a mixture of Metallic and Pearlized shades to show you today. I even put Sequin (reviewed here) on the back of my hand and rubbed at it with my finger once it was set, using increasingly hard pressure, and it didn't smear or fade at all. Pretty much the only transfer was a small amount of glitter on my finger.

I Heart This is a 'cool-toned silvery taupe with multi-coloured glitter' with a Metallic finish. It wound up being one of my favourite colours from this order and I've reached for it often since, sometimes as a lid colour like I've shown below and other times as a blingy inner corner highlight or patted down the centre of the lid. I Heart This is incredibly versatile and I highly recommend it!

For this look I applied I Heart This all over the lid and used the LORAC Pro palette to add some very light definition to the crease and to highlight. I also used Tosowoong Bronze Spectrum Waterproof Gel Pencil Liner in Gold Glow on the lower lashline, Moon Princess false eyelashes from Born Pretty Store and NV Colour Felt Tip eyeliner in Blue Velvet.

On the Rocks

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - On the Rocks Swatches & Review

On The Rocks is a 'vibrant true bronze with gold and violet glitter' in a Metallic finish. It's a colour I was immediately drawn to because I'm predictable and thrash bronze like no tomorrow (and if there is no tomorrow, you may as well go out wearing a colour you love!). On The Rocks doesn't disappoint, it's sparkly as hell and the colour is gorgeous.

Mooning is a 'rich blackened bronze highlighted with warm hints of pearlized glitter' and a Pearlized finish. Although the Pearlized finish is just as packed with glitter as the Metallics, they have less sparkle in the base colour and with Mooning, I found it harder to keep both the glitter visible and the edges blended. The lack of sparkle in the base colour made it a bit less forgiving in this respect. I'll probably wear it as a lid colour next time for this reason and rely on a matte shade to blend the edges so the sparkle isn't constantly being dusted away. I had much greater success using it on the lower lashline below as I could really press the colour into place.

Here I used On the Rocks all over the lid/inner half of lower lashline, Mooning on the outer half of the lid and lower lashline and I Heart This on the inner corner. I also used the LORAC Pro palette to blend out (admittedly, not my best effort) and some Mon Secret lashes from Japan City.

Cricket

Cricket is a 'smoky mid-tone plum with warm and cool highlights of soft glitter' and a Metallic finish. It was a bit of a wild card purchase, because I don't wear a lot of purple, but I'm really glad I took the plunge; the mix of smokiness with the plum is beautiful.

ColourPop Super Shock Shadow - Cricket Swatches & Review

I used Cricket on the lid and lower lashline with the LORAC Pro palette for crease, transition and blending. The highlight is Clarins Lovely Rose eyeshadow (discontinued) and the lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.

What I liked:
  • Excellent colour pay off
  • Low price
  • Easy to blend
  • Budge proof once set!
What I didn't like:
  • I experience a lot of fall out with some of the glittery shades.

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick - I'm Nude, Celebrity Skin, Queen Supreme, Anna Nicole, Redrum, Unicorn Blood, Weirdo Swatches & Review

From the second I swiped on Redrum, my first Jeffree Star lipstick, I never really stood a chance. The super saturated colour pay off and easy application won me over instantaneously and even as I leaned away from the mirror to study my wickedly red pout, I was murmuring "I'm going to need more of these..."

And of course, you can see I made good on that promise, six times over (and then twice more for good measure - see the two Holiday 2015 shades I chose here). I regret nothing, except that I don't yet possess Androgyny and Gemini. Someday, my pretties. Someday.

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

Formula overview:
The Velour Liquid Lipsticks have a stellar formula! They're incredibly opaque, the consistency is neither too thick nor too thin, they're easy to control, non-tacky and have a quick dry down time. Once applied, they don't feather or smudge and wear for ages - everything I've wear tested from the brand so far has lasted at least five hours and some have even gone up to nine. I didn't find any of these shades drying and I cannot detect any scent or taste to them (although the website notes there is now a rootbeer float scent added to some shades).

The packaging immediately grabs attention with the Barbie pink colour scheme and rose gold accents. I really like the clear wand stem, I don't know why that really appeals to me in the grand scheme of things but there it is :D The doefoot applicator is slightly concave to hug the lips and evenly spread the lipstick and it's quite pointed, which makes it easy to be precise. You get a decent amount of product in here too, 5.6ml for $18USD - comparatively, a Lime Crime Velvetine is 2.6ml for $20USD.

I'm Nude

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick - I'm Nude Swatches & Review

I'm Nude is described as a 'light tan-based nude'. It's just a few shades above the concealer lips look on me and could be a hard to wear shade on some skintones on its own, but paired with a lipliner or gloss it has so much potential! I do really like it and I'm especially impressed with how pigmented and easy it is to apply for a lighter shade - there's no hint of chalkiness. I'm Nude lasted five hous on me.

Celebrity Skin

Celebrity Skin is described as a 'soft brown nude with a peachy undertone'. It's a gorgeous warm nineties brown that has had everyone clamouring for it and I can see why now that I've tried it! I think it's very flattering. Love the Hole reference, too. Celebrity Skin lasted a massive nine hours on me!

Queen Supreme

Queen Supreme is described as a 'neon pastel pink'. They're not kidding about the neon, the blue tones are so strong that Queen Supreme verges on being lavender on me. It's a very fun shade to wear and again, I experienced no chalkiness (as is common in neon liquid mattes), just creamy, opaque colour pay off. Queen Supreme wore for five hours on me.

Anna Nicole

Anna Nicole is an orangey-red. The flame hue is positively aglow and it's insanely flattering on warm skintones! I cannot get enough of Anna Nicole, and the feeling's pretty mutual - she wore for five hours on me.

Redrum is a cool toned medium-dark red. Oh Redrum, the shade that started it all! Could there be a more perfect red? I'm truly, madly, deeply in love with it. It wore for six hours on me.

Unicorn Blood

Unicorn Blood is described as a 'dark rusty matte red'. It's a lovely vampy shade I'll be rocking often as the weather continues to cool here in NZ. Unicorn Blood clocked in five hours on me.

Weirdo

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick - Weirdo Swatches & Review

Weirdo is an inky true black. This is fun to wear and one of the most opaque and easy to control black lipsticks I've used. Weirdo is eye safe too, with the brand suggesting you can also use it as a liquid liner - handy in a pinch, I suppose, if you happen to have an eyeliner brush? Or if you're super committed to the Jeffree Star makeup line. It lasted six hours on me.

What I liked:
  • Incredible colour pay off
  • Smooth, easy application
  • Non feathering
  • Non drying
  • Lasts between five and nine hours
  • Cruelty free and vegan
What I didn't like:
  • Nothing!
Where to buy:
  • Jeffree Star, RRP $18USD for 5.6ml (unfortunately sold out at the time of writing)
  • Ebay (best bet for sold out shades)
  • Also try Glambot for gently loved, limited edition or hard to find products
